There are three ways to write blank program cards for the Workshop Computer.

The quick way

  • First, connect the USB-C socket on the front of Computer to your computer. Turn the Workshop System power off and on again.
  • Go to any program card page on computer.musicthing.co.uk
  • REMOVE any program card from the Computer so the slot is empty
  • Press the little load button next to the Program Card Slot
  • Now, on the website, “Connect Workshop Computer” and give any permission requested.
  • Select the USB connection ‘RP Boot’
  • NOW PUT THE CARD INTO THE SLOT, but do not press the button
  • On the website, press the green PROGRAM button and it will write the card and immediately load it.

The traditional way

  • This video explains how to write blank cards in three minutes
  • You will have downloaded a .uf2 file. This is the firmware.
  • Pull off the main knob at the top of Computer (it’s stiff at first, gets easier quickly). Behind it you’ll see little button recessed into the panel.
  • Put the card you want to write into the card slot. Check it’s the right one. Printed cards are not write protected, so you can write over a Reverb+ as easily as a Blank card.
  • Connect a USB-C cable from the front panel USB port to your computer. Cycle power on the Workshop System to ensure the Workshop Computer connects to the computer.
  • Hold down the top button, then tap and release the bottom button next to the Program Card slot. If it doesn’t appear, turn the Workshop System off and on and try again.
  • A folder called RPI-RP2 will appear on your desktop
  • Drag the relevant .uf2 file onto the folder. The folder will disappear, and the firmware is updated.
  • IMPORTANT: On a Mac, you’ll see an error message “Disk Not Ejected Properly”. You can ignore that message, it happens when the card has been correctly written.

The ‘I can’t pull the knob off my Computer’ way

  • While connected by USB, remove the program card and press reset or cycle power with an empty slot.
  • You’ll see an RPI-RP2 folder appear on your desktop.
  • Now, insert the card you want to write. Do not press the little button!
  • Drop the .uf2 file onto the folder, and it should write as normal.
  • IMPORTANT: On a Mac, you’ll see an error message “Disk Not Ejected Properly”. You can ignore that message, it happens when the card has been correctly written.
